Marathon RPG
Made for the September 2026 Marathon Jam, for games inspired by the FPS series, Marathon.
I wanted to convert the entirety of the first level of 1994's Marathon, Arrival, into a JRPG, while still having some of the flair of a First Person Shooter. This is why the ScreenZoom plugin is being used, so I can try to approximate how cramped classic Marathon can feel.
I was working on custom walking sprites for the Security member you play as, but I got intimidated by trying to make the side walking sprites.
Controls are listed in the game's opening, but I'll post them here too.
Arrow Keys to move, Z/Enter to Confirm, Esc/X for back/menu.
Shift to run.
Gain XP from collecting ammo boxes on the map, to learn new skills to help in combat. Defeating Compilers removes Random Encounters for regions of the map. Ammo boxes also heal you, and there is a health station in the map.
BUGS
Running is guaranteed from everything but Compilers. This can trivialize the game, but hey, I'm not your dad, do what you gotta do.

- PICO's Encounter Control Plugin - Has an AI Disclosure for art on the page, but I couldn't see anything for the script itself.
Think that's everything. Thanks for checking it out! Was fun to hammer this out and learn some stuff about RPG Maker. This is also how I found out about Itch's file limit for zip folders... Sorry to anyone who tried to access it right away.

Beat it!
Took a couple tries, and it's a shame you only get xp through ammo drops since it makes stomping the phor kinda meaningless. I think the random encounters are a bit too frequent, to the point I just fled every fight and the compiler could only be killed with max health - which thanks to the low ammo meant I literally couldn't do it if I picked up too much
This was really cool and a crazy way of seeing Marathon. I got through cuz I know Arrival pretty well by now, but I think it being zoomed in doesn't add as much as you hoped. Remember the game gives you a map, so though it's cramped you always know where to go
Very cool, I like and would love to see you work more on it if you're interested
Sorry, i'm running into an issue right away,
On the start menu + after im having this pop up paused the game, and continually reappear after dismissing.
* "Failed to load
audio/se/Buzzer1.ogg"
I managed to spam past it into 'new game', but then had this second pop up in addition to the first one.
*"Failed to load
audio/bgm/Talashar%20-%20Eupfhoria%20-%2008%20Landing.ogg"
I'm excited to give the game a run through
_____________
in case specs matter for itch browser games, I'm running Safari on a 2024 macbook
I must've gotten too aggressive trying to make it fit the file limit. Thanks for the heads up!
OK! Got it running! Thanks for the heads up.
